Starcraft 2: The Races

September 26th 2010 22:29
The release of Starcraft 2 has taken the pc gaming genre by storm and is capturing the attention of the novice to the experienced gamer. Here is a detailed look at each of the Starcraft 2 races so you can determine which one is better suited for your playing style.

Terran Race

The Terran or human race tends to be the first choice for someone first getting their feet wet in Starcraft 2 because their unit structure and buildings are the easiest to learn. But do not let the ease of use fool you because as the game develops, the Terran race develops into well-balanced force.

There are several strengths of the Terran race that you should be aware of. You have solid defense and can be very mobile with your units. You are able to build structures anywhere and repair your buildings and vehicles. You will have several heavily armored units that offer up strong siege capabilities.

As an added bonus, your medivacs can heal while airborne or in transport mode. The Terran race does have some weaknesses, like the needed to micromanage your units, bunkers need a good deal of resources and manpower if they are going to be effective with their defense.

Protoss Race

The Protoss race is built around Psy energy and the use of technology. This translates into you being able to build more than one building at once. When you couple this with the Chrono Boost to speed up your production of units, you will find you are able to develop more quickly than the other races.

There are several strengths of the Protoss race that you should be aware of in Starcraft 2. They have access to powerful defensive units and have a warpgate that can help move your units for a quick deployment. The Protoss also have a photon canon that can attack land or air units, including detecting invisible ones.

One of the biggest weaknesses of the Protoss race is that you are limited where you place your buildings because they need to be in the psionic matrix. Once out of the matrix, the buildings go offline and become useless.

Zerg Race
If you are looking for a challenge in Starcraft 2, the Zerg race is the right one for you. This Swarm race follows the belief that there is strength in numbers. They can prove to be a challenge when you start out but will eventually become very powerful as you begin to understand how the game mechanics work.

One of the strengths of the Zerg race is that the units can be built efficiently and cheaply, allowing you to amass a large supply in a short amount of time. All of the Zerg land units can burrow underground, while the Roach and Infestor can travel as well. As an added bonus, your defensive structures can be uprooted and moved at your will.

The biggest drawback for the Zerg race is that their units travel together, making them susceptible to splash attacks that can take out your entire force in one fell swoop. Units do not offer the same firepower as other races and you lose drones when new buildings are created.
