Hunter’s Pet Changes in the World of Warcraft: Cataclysm Expansion

October 10th 2010 17:55

The release of the Cataclysm expansion for World of Warcraft is going to bring changes to just about everything in the game, from the landscape to how the talent system is formulated. These changes include the ones Blizzard has created for the Hunter’s Pet class.

The first change instituted for Hunters is that every new level 1 hunter will start with a pet. Prior to Cataclysm, Hunters had to fight solo until they reached level 10 and learned how to tame their own pet. Now, new Hunters will find they already have a companion by their side. This alone is going to make the initial leveling process even easier.

Another big thing for Hunter’s pet is the change made by Blizzard where their pet will now have the ability to bring buffs to raid instances.

For one thing, this change means you will see Hunters bringing different pets to raids instead of the wolf pet that every Hunter brought before Cataclysm. For example, say you bring a Ferocity pet, like a Cat. Your raid group will benefit from a buff to agility and strength for Shamans, Warriors, and Death Knights. Maybe you want to bring along your Cunning pet, say a Serpent. Your raid group will see a 12% armor debuff on the Warrior, Druid, and Rogues in your group.

These changes will make Hunters actually think about what they are going to take rather than just going with the old standby.

Blizzard also made big changes to the Hunter’s stable and how he manages his pets.

When Catalysm begins, Hunters will have an Active pet and a Stored pet. Each Hunter will be able to have 3 Active pets, except for those specialized in Beast Mastery who will be able to have 5 Active pets. Hunters will be allowed to switch between these Active pets on a regular basis as long as they are not in combat.

This means no wasted trips returning to town to grab a different pet. The Stored pets will work the same way as the previous system, with the only exception being the number of Stored pets has been increased.

With the changing of the Talent system, Hunter’s pet will no longer receive passive damage bonuses in the Beast Mastery talent tree. Instead these bonuses will be provided through the new Mastery system.

For now, Hunters who choose the Beast Mastery talent tree will receive a Master of Beasts, which increase the damage of your Pet by 13.6%. For each Mastery point, your Pet will see an increase of 1.7%.

The last to point out with regard to changes to Hunter’s pets is that blizzard went through the old Pet Talents and altered how some of them work. So when the World of Warcraft Cataclysm expansion comes out, make sure to take the time to look over your old pets to see what they are capable of.
